Welcome back to another edition of Real World ITIL.

We haven’t blogged in a while because we’ve been devoting the limited time we have for blog writing in order to adapt the ITIL white paper we wrote last year for publication in a national IT magazine. We expect that it will appear in print soon and will let you know if it does. The white paper itself will be available for download through Evergreen’s website sometime after the magazine issue is released. Thanks to each of our readers who submitted helpful suggestions, comments, feedback and edits on the paperĀ - it’s a better work because of your help!

IT Change Management - Start with a Request not the Implementation Phase

Below is a good example of how most organizations look at where the IT Change Management process starts - with the actual implementation. The implementation phase is actually the 5th phase of an effective change management program. In previous discussions I’ve listed the major IT change management phases. These include: Request, Analysis (Risk, Impact, Cost), Approval, Development and Testing, IMPLEMENTATION, Validation and Documentation. These are clearly defined in the ITIL standards. Omitting the first 4 phases opens the door and encourages failed changes.

I was sitting in a customer review to discuss the go-live process for an IT asset management (ITAM) project with one of our customers when the topic turned to their change management process.

Hi Guys-

We are leaning into the weekend, huh? Still lots to be done before the clock winds down.

Here is an interesting piece from Forrester Analyst Dennis Gaughan, on the overall impact of Service Oriented Architectures and Effective IT.

We have begun noodling the SOA to CMMI to ITIL to CobiT linkages, and how it applies to a Process Framework view of running IT better.

Dennis’ approach is good common sense–the faster the parts move, the more critical it will be to have effective planning and process controls in place, enterprise wide.

Have fun out there,

OA Changes the Nature of Innovation for IT
Thursday, March 09, 2006
Dennis Gaughan

One of the most common IT governance inquiries we get is: How to do we start shifting focus toward the value that IT delivers and away from the cost of IT? The role technology plays in creating innovation for its enterprise customers is a major element of that discussion. For example, developing software that lets salespeople identify their most profitable customers, or an automated portal that slashes the time it takes to bring new suppliers online.

IT does play a role in automating innovative business processes, Now, the technology to do that is largely based on service-oriented architectures (SOAs). SOAs promise improved speed in bringing these new abilities to market by increasing the reuse of existing assets.

CMDB Assessment

Hello to all in the Blog-o-sphere.

Blogs are kind of like a throwback to childhood when you could say pretty much what you wanted because you didn’t know any better. Just kidding! They do allow a certain freedom though.

We have just released a new consulting planning engagement for building an ITIL Configuration Management Data Base ( CMDB ) strategy, built upon two or three CMDB assessments we have completed in the last few months. I would like to make a few points about why it might be worth a look if you are serious about CMDB.
